France

France produces huge volumes of wine in a wide range and styles.

Some notifications what you can find on the wine labels and can be confusing.

PDO Wines - French for PDO is AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) - but the traditional term is still often seen AOC or AC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée).

PGI Wines - French for PGI is IGP Indication Géographique Protégée - but often producers still use VdP (Vin de Pays).

Champagne

Champagne Consists of a single appellation. Certain villages within the region have a Cru status; 44 are rated Premier Cru and 17 Grand Cru, but these are not separate appellations. It is the whole village that is rated and not specific vineyards sites, like in the Burgundy or Alsace.

Within the appellation boundaries there are five sub-regions. The three most famous are close to Reims and Épernay, they are Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs. The Côte de Sézanne lies arround 30 kilometers south-west of Épernay and the Côte des Bar is more than 100 kilometers to the south-east.

Champagne has a cool continental climate. Freeze, spring frosts and rain, cloudy weather are the challenges of growers in the area.

The soils in Champagne are dominated by chalk, which provides good drainage.

Burgundy

Chablis is the most northern part of the Burgundy. Same as in the Champagne, Chablis has the issues with frosts, hail and rain. The soil is in better parts richer of chalk.

The Burgundy is divided into Chablis - Côte d'Or (are Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune) - Côte Chalonnaise - Mâconnais.

Here is not by village that the status Premier Cru or Grand Cru  are given, but per specific vineyard.

One of the most easy to remember concerning grape varieties. Two, Chardonnay for white and Pinot Noir from red, these are the most common.
